The Mekong marine ecosystem is actually a vast and diverse freshwater and estuarine ecosystem that is one of the most biodiverse river systems in the world, supporting over 1,200 fish species and numerous other aquatic and non-aquatic life. It is crucial for the livelihoods of about 65 million people in Southeast Asia but is under threat from factors like dam construction, which blocks fish migration, and other pressures from economic development.
